Record
A deliberately or automatically preserved trace. A record can be authentic and still be partial, misleading, wrongly framed, or overextended beyond the claim it can support.
Checkpoint
A trace, event, state, measurement, witness, or procedure sufficiently stabilized by verification to constrain later interpretation. Checkpoint strength is scalar, not binary. Meaning may move between checkpoints, but later interpretations remain answerable to them.
