The public cases, laws, technologies, and research claims in this book are traceable here by chapter. Composite scenes are not reported cases and do not refer to identified individuals. Sources are grouped rather than attached to every sentence so the main text can remain readable; the grouping does not loosen the obligation to distinguish illustration from evidence.
Time-sensitive laws, products, standards, and platform features were checked through July 11, 2026. They should be verified again at publication. Legal and clinical sources are used for conceptual and evidentiary discipline, not as jurisdiction-specific advice or treatment guidance.
Introduction - The Doorway2 sources
Andy Clark, "Whatever Next? STAR does not adopt one predictive-processing account as its neural theory; the work is part of the broader scientific background for treating experience as constructed and constrained.
Frederic C. Bartlett, Remembering: A Study in Experimental and Social Psychology (Cambridge University Press, 1932), remains foundational for reconstructive memory. Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its Consequences (MIT Press, 1999), and Miranda Fricker, Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing (Oxford University Press, 2007), inform the book's treatment of records, categories, credibility, and power.
Chapter 1 - Event, Signal, Trace2 sources
James J. Gibson, The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception (Houghton Mifflin, 1979), emphasizes information available in an environment and the active relation between perceiver and world. Clark's "Whatever Next?" and Karl Friston, "The Free-Energy Principle: A Unified Brain Theory?" Nature Reviews Neuroscience 11 (2010): 127-138, doi:10.1038/nrn2787, represent influential predictive traditions. STAR uses them as neighboring accounts, not proof of its full loop.
Lisa Feldman Barrett and W. Edwin Hutchins, Cognition in the Wild (MIT Press, 1995), shows cognition distributed across people, tools, procedures, and environments. Daniel M. Wegner, "Transactive Memory: A Contemporary Analysis of the Group Mind," in Theories of Group Behavior, edited by Brian Mullen and George R. Goethals (Springer, 1987), 185-208, develops the idea that groups remember partly through differentiated knowledge of who knows what.
Bowker and Star, Sorting Things Out, provides the institutional and classificatory background for the five-register archive. José van Dijck, Mediated Memories in the Digital Age (Stanford University Press, 2007), examines the relation among personal memory, media, technology, and cultural practice. The five-register matrix (internal, somatic, social, institutional, and digital) is STAR's synthesis; it should not be read as a claim that every register stores information by the same mechanism.

STAR's separation of render from interpretation is a functional distinction influenced by these traditions.
Chapter 5 - Constraint, Checkpoints, and Feedback3 sources
The Innocence Project's case profile "Ronald Cotton" documents the July 29, 1984 crime, the identification procedures, the 1985 and 1987 trials, DNA exclusion and match to Bobbie Poole, Cotton's June 30, 1995 exoneration, and the later public work of Ronald Cotton and Jennifer Thompson-Cannino. The profile spells Poole's first name Bobbie; some secondary accounts render it Bobby.
National Research Council, Identifying the Culprit: Assessing Eyewitness Identification (National Academies Press, 2014), doi:10.17226/18891, reviews limits of perception and memory, confidence, system variables, and identification procedures. STAR uses the case to distinguish sincere experience from factually reliable identification; it does not treat one case as a complete theory of eyewitness evidence.
U.S. Department of Justice, Eyewitness Identification: Procedures for Conducting Photo Arrays, memorandum dated January 6, 2017, emphasizes blind or blinded administration where practicable, standardized instructions, recording initial confidence, and avoiding feedback. These procedural principles support the chapter's concern with provenance and independence.

Kelly M. Lynn Hasher, David Goldstein, and Thomas Toppino, "Frequency and the Conference of Referential Validity," Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior 16 (1977): 107-112, is an early demonstration of repetition increasing perceived truth. Kunda's work on motivated reasoning and Henri Tajfel and John Turner's social-identity tradition inform the roles of group membership, moral signaling, and identity-protective interpretation.
The phrase "query capture" is STAR's synthesis. It names the control of orientation, selection, weighting, and framing before an audience evaluates an answer.
Chapter 14 - This Is Not a Collision5 sources
UK Home Office, Controlling or Coercive Behaviour: Statutory Guidance Framework, published April 5, 2023, and updated July 27, 2023, treats controlling or coercive behavior as a pattern over time rather than a single incident and emphasizes context, power, and cumulative effect. It is jurisdiction-specific to England and Wales and is used for conceptual and evidentiary discipline, not legal advice.
World Health Organization, "Violence against Women" fact sheet and related intimate-partner-violence materials, checked July 11, 2026. WHO definitions include psychological abuse and controlling behavior alongside physical and sexual harm. The chapter uses gender-inclusive prose while acknowledging that the global burden is not evenly distributed.
National Domestic Violence Hotline, safety-planning and "Why People Stay" resources, checked July 11, 2026, stress that leaving can trigger retaliation and that safety planning must fit the survivor's circumstances. They support the chapter's refusal to treat separation as a simple conversational remedy.

StoryFile describes users recording video answers in advance and AI selecting the most appropriate recorded response to a later question; its support material states that the AI does not invent the answer. The public site directed prospective users to a waitlist at the time of review, so the main text makes no availability claim. Product wording and access require publication-date verification.
Tomasz Hollanek and Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska, "Griefbots, Deadbots, Postmortem Avatars: On Responsible Applications of Generative AI in the Digital Afterlife Industry," Philosophy & Technology 37 (2024), article 63, doi:10.1007/s13347-024-00744-w, distinguishes data donor, data recipient, and service interactant and uses design scenarios to map consent, dignity, monetization, and governance risks. It is an ethics analysis, not evidence that any product improves grief outcomes.
HereAfter AI, official product page, checked July 11, 2026. The site stated that the service was shutting down while preserving a description of a virtual interviewer, recorded life stories, uploaded photographs, and later spoken questions that return memories in the person's recorded voice. It is used as a historical product example of interactive retrieval, not as proof of personal continuation or therapeutic benefit.
OpenAI, "Memory FAQ" and "Temporary Chat FAQ," checked July 11, 2026. The documentation states that saved memories and reference to chat history can personalize later responses; users can review, delete, or disable these features; and Temporary Chat neither uses nor creates personalization memories. Availability and controls vary by plan and product surface. Microsoft's consumer Copilot privacy and memory documentation, checked July 11, 2026, separately describes controls to view, edit, delete, or disable remembered details. Microsoft 365 Copilot has its own saved-memory and chat-history controls. All current product details require immediate pre-publication verification.

Federal Communications Commission, "FCC Fines Man Behind Election Interference Scheme $6 Million for Sending Illegal Robocalls That Used Deepfake Generative AI Technology," September 26, 2024. The FCC found that political consultant Steve Kramer instigated spoofed robocalls using an AI-generated imitation of President Joe Biden's voice to tell potential New Hampshire primary voters not to vote. The case is used to show a synthetic trace seeking the sensory authority of direct speech; the chapter makes no claim that the calls determined an election outcome.

Content Credentials can attach or link cryptographically signed provenance assertions and action history to digital assets. The specification does not make provenance a truth oracle, identify every creator, or establish the truth of a caption.

The study's setting, population, and platform era limit broader inference.
The chapter's feed loop (user archive/state, ranking objective, selected signal, render/action, behavioral trace, model update) is an integrative model. Platforms are heterogeneous, objectives change, and a single user experience does not reveal internal ranking logic.
Chapter 19 - The Unrecorded Gap4 sources
Regulation (EU) 2016/679, General Data Protection Regulation, Article 17, "Right to Erasure ('Right to Be Forgotten')," applicable since May 25, 2018. The right is conditional and includes exceptions for freedom of expression and information, legal obligations, public interest, research and archiving under specified conditions, and the establishment, exercise, or defense of legal claims. The chapter's discussion is limited to the European framework and is not legal advice.
Court of Justice of the European Union, Google Spain SL and Google Inc. v Agencia Española de Protección de Datos and Mario Costeja González, Case C-131/12, judgment of May 13, 2014, established circumstances in which search-engine links to personal information may be de-referenced even when the underlying publication remains lawful. Later European cases further define territorial scope and sensitive-data balancing.
Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age (Princeton University Press, 2009), and Nissenbaum, Privacy in Context, inform the relationship among persistence, retrieval, purpose, and contextual integrity. Meg Leta Ambrose, "It's About Time: Privacy, Information Life Cycles, and the Right to Be Forgotten," Stanford Technology Law Review 16 (2013): 369-422, reviews the legal and conceptual history of forgetting and information life cycles.
The control matrix (capture, retrieval, correction, deletion, inheritance, and appeal) is STAR's governance synthesis. It does not create a universal right to erase other people's records of shared events or to destroy evidence required for accountability.
