For three years, Adrian leaves any place that plays the song.
It was playing in the car when he received the call that his closest friend had died. The first notes do not remind him in the ordinary sense. They replace the room. A grocery store becomes the parked car. A wedding becomes the call. The body is already gone before anyone asks whether he is all right.
Then, gradually, the song changes. Not into a pleasant song. Not into nothing.
It plays once in a cafe while Adrian is speaking with someone who does not know the history. He notices the first notes and remains seated. The call appears, but it does not fill the entire field. The coffee is still warm. The person across from him is still finishing a sentence. The present does not disappear.
The checkpoint remains. His friend died. The call came in the car. The song was playing. The emotional price of retrieving the checkpoint has changed.
This is one form of reweighting. The trace has not been deleted. Its meaning has not become positive. Its authority over the whole present has weakened enough that other signals can enter.
A thin present is not a blank mind. It is a present less crowded by archived demand.
