Morgan wakes before the alarm.

For a few seconds, the room asks nothing. The body knows the chair in the corner, the faint line of streetlight at the curtain, the cooler air beyond the blanket. The day has not yet become a schedule. It is only darkness, breath, and the small mercy of not having looked at anything.

Then the phone on the nightstand lights.

6:17.

The alarm was set for 6:30, so thirteen minutes have appeared. They do not feel like a gift. They feel like a narrow ledge between sleep and the part of the day that has opinions.

A bank notification says the balance is above the number Morgan has been pretending not to treat as a number. Relief arrives quickly and physically: not happiness, exactly, more the absence of a small animal chewing a wire.

The calendar follows. Nine o'clock. Eleven-thirty. Two. The day, which a minute ago had no walls, begins to acquire them. Then there is a message from Lena, sent late.
