Morgan sees Ava at the far end of the kitchen.
Ava is sixteen now, tall enough that the old family photograph on the refrigerator looks like evidence from another species. She is standing beside the sink with one earbud in, listening to her mother explain where the serving plates are. When Morgan enters, Ava looks up, gives a quick half-smile, and goes upstairs.
The movement takes less than ten seconds. Morgan feels the room reorganize.
Ava used to run toward the door. Last summer, after an argument with Ava's mother, Morgan missed two family dinners. There has been no open rupture, only the administrative quiet by which families sometimes turn injury into schedule. Morgan notices the earbud, the half-smile, the speed of the exit, and the fact that Ava did not say hello.
A question begins answering itself: what have they told her about me?
The question was not chosen from a list. It arrived as the practical shape of the moment, deciding what counted as information before Morgan knew a decision was being made. Ava's exit became central. Her mother's warm greeting became suspiciously careful. The food on the counter, the open back door, the dog barking at a delivery driver, and Ava's pale face remained visible without entering with equal force.
By the time Morgan removes a coat, the lived world is already social exile. Then Ava's mother says, "She's been sick all afternoon. I told her to go lie down, but she wanted to wait until you got here." The room changes again.
