Memory should be treated as a witness with standing, limits, and questions worth asking. What is remembered directly? What was learned later?

Which parts have remained stable across time? What is the person most confident about, and why? Were accounts recorded independently?

What current query is organizing recall? Which external traces converge? What does inconsistency concern: central event, sequence, peripheral detail, or interpretation?

The purpose is not to interrogate ordinary people like hostile counsel. It is to match epistemic care to consequence. Fragmented recall does not prove falsehood. Smooth recall does not prove truth. Emotion does not disqualify memory. Lack of emotion does not authenticate it. Trauma, stress, sleep, age, repetition, suggestion, and social context can affect recall in different ways; none supplies a one-line verdict.

The most respectful position is neither belief without constraint nor suspicion without listening. It is disciplined hospitality. Let the memory enter. Ask what kind of trace it is. Allow other registers to matter. Keep the route of correction open.
