What this does not prove

A useful question can widen the field. It does not guarantee a single correct answer.

Where this comes fromConstraint, Checkpoints, and Feedback · A distributed court of appealv0.16 website edition

No single archive can be trusted to certify itself from a clean balcony. Memory can be vivid and wrong. Bodies can signal real distress without identifying its cause. Witnesses can agree because they influenced one another. Documents can preserve bias with excellent formatting. Institutions can stabilize error. Digital records can be cropped, generated, altered, or stripped of context. Laboratories can fail. Experts can overreach. Majorities can repeat a story until dissent sounds pathological.

The answer is not to abandon checkpoints. It is to distribute verification.

The internal archive should be able to meet the document. The document should be checked against provenance. The institution should be answerable to witnesses it does not control. The witness should be testable against physical evidence. The laboratory should be subject to method, review, and challenge. The official record should remain open to correction from other registers.

The archive audits itself only by not being one thing.

This is also a question of power. Who can enter a trace? Who can inspect it? Who can challenge it? Who benefits if it remains unchanged? Who pays the consequence while the appeal is pending?

A verdict that cannot be appealed, a personnel file the subject cannot see, a family story no one may question, or a model output whose sources cannot be examined may function as settled fact. That does not make it a strong checkpoint. It may be power wearing the costume of certainty.

The archive age makes this distinction more urgent. A counterfeit trace, whether a fabricated recording, altered image, synthetic voice, or misleadingly edited clip, can seek checkpoint status by imitating the appearance of evidence. Its realism may be high while its provenance is absent. The response cannot be to trust every realistic record, nor to dismiss every record as possibly fake. It is to strengthen the routes by which origin, alteration, convergence, and contestability can be checked.
