The discipline of the unknown

One final category deserves protection even though it is not another component of the model: unknown.

People often experience an unknown as a vacuum that must be filled before action can continue. The mind is rarely content to leave Lewis's motive blank, the sender's intention undecided, or the cause of a bodily change unassigned. A plausible interpretation enters, then loses the label plausible. Soon the gap itself is treated as evidence for the story that filled it.

But absence is not a signal with a hidden message inside it. Silence may be strategic, careless, constrained, hostile, overwhelmed, or meaningless. A missing record may indicate concealment, poor practice, exclusion, technical failure, or that no record was created. The honest classification is sometimes not enough information.

That answer can feel weak because it provides no orientation. In fact, it is often a stronger starting point than invented certainty. Unknown can justify a clarifying question, a reversible decision, a request for records, a boundary, a safety precaution, or deliberate delay. It does not require passivity. It requires that the action be matched to what is actually established.

The unknown is not a romantic fog around reality. It is a marked space in the account where reality has not yet yielded enough.

Keeping that space visible is one of the first ways to recover control of the question. It prevents the most emotionally available trace from occupying every empty seat in the room.
