Constraint

A checkpoint closes some claims. It does not close the human meaning of the event. DNA evidence established that Cotton was not the source of the biological evidence and that Poole was. It corrected the central factual error. It did not tell Cotton what to do with ten lost years. It did not dictate how Thompson should live with the knowledge that her sincere identification helped imprison an innocent man. It did not settle what forgiveness, responsibility, grief, anger, or repair should mean afterward.

The factual correction was decisive and incomplete.

This is the balance STAR needs. A life built without checkpoints becomes fantasy. A life reduced to checkpoints becomes a spreadsheet with a pulse.

The photograph constrains who stood in the light, not what the afternoon meant. The contract constrains what was promised, not whether the relationship was generous. The scar constrains any story that says the body was untouched, but it does not choose the identity the person must build around it. The meeting record can establish what decision was entered. It cannot contain every fear, omission, motive, or unequal risk in the room.

Constraint is not closure.

Meaning is not stored fully in a checkpoint; it is made between checkpoints. The checkpoints tell us which meanings are no longer honest. They do not appoint the only meaning left.

That distinction protects two things at once. It protects factual reality from the appetite of interpretation, and it protects human life from being reduced to whatever can be measured, timestamped, photographed, or filed. The space between checkpoints is constrained, not empty; revisable, not arbitrary. It is where interpretation becomes answerable and agency remains possible.
