What this does not prove
Use this as a handle for noticing a pattern, not as a label that settles a person or event.
An event is an occurrence or state of affairs that is not exhausted by any one person's experience of it.
The meeting happened. Lewis said a sentence. The room had a temperature. The clock advanced. Finance had issued an instruction. Maya's promotion was under review. These facts did not wait for Maya to interpret them into existence.
But the event is not a God's-eye recording available to a human observer in pure form. We do not stand outside the room, outside our bodies, outside time, holding every causal detail at equal resolution. Even the most careful account is a constrained reconstruction built from available evidence. This creates a useful tension.
The event is real enough to resist us.
Our access to it is partial enough to require humility.
When this book speaks of an event, it means the best constrained account of what occurred, including the possibility that some parts remain unknown. It does not mean raw reality poured directly into a mind. It also does not mean whatever story a person finds emotionally satisfying.
In Maya's case, the event includes more than the sentence she remembers. It includes the institutional instruction Lewis had received, the social setting in which he answered, the words he chose, the information he withheld, and the consequences of leaving ambiguity uncorrected. Some of those elements become available only later. Some may never become available at all.
