How a question becomes a world
Understand how a question becomes a world in ordinary language first. The exact definition and manuscript source follow below.
In ordinary words
Orientation is what the system is currently for.
What this does not prove
Use this as a handle for noticing a pattern, not as a label that settles a person or event.
Orientation is what the system is currently for. It may be organized around safety, connection, status, completion, escape, repair, control, belonging, accuracy, relief, duty, or some mixture. It is not always conscious, and it is not the same as a stated value.
A person who says they want truth may be oriented in the moment toward avoiding humiliation. A person who says they want peace may be trying to win quickly enough to stop feeling powerless.
Morgan entered the kitchen wanting connection, but the live orientation was protection from renewed exclusion. That orientation did not invent the family history. It turned the kitchen into a place where evidence of spread mattered most.
Selection follows from that practical field. No render can use everything available, so some signals become relevant and others remain background. Morgan admitted the earbud, the half-smile, the exit, and the missed greeting. Ava's pale face did not disappear physically; it disappeared functionally.
The same process can be trained, frightened, habitual, expert, institutional, or designed. A radiologist selects features an untrained viewer does not see. A hostile meeting chair notices interruptions from one person and overlooks them from another. A form admits the details that fit its boxes. An archive search can rank the summary above the dissenting attachment until dissent technically exists and practically vanishes.
What is not selected cannot be weighed fairly later. This is why invitations to "look at all the facts" can be sincere and still impossible. Facts do not arrive as a neutral heap. They must become available, noticed, retrievable, and recognized as relevant. Selection is therefore not only private attention. It is often governed.
Weighting decides how much influence a selected element receives. A single word from a partner may outweigh ten warm actions because it resembles an earlier betrayal. A small technical fluctuation may outweigh a day of normal readings because an experienced operator recognizes the pattern. A comment from a powerful person may outweigh several corrections from people without authority. Morgan's missed dinners gave Ava's exit weight. That weight was not merely baggage; it contained learning. The question is whether it remained calibrated to this moment.
