Framing

Understand framing in ordinary language first. The exact definition and manuscript source follow below.

In ordinary words

The story-shape imposed on the weighted material: betrayal, lesson, threat, accident, test, chapter, proof, opportunity, and so on.

What this does not prove

Use this as a handle for noticing a pattern, not as a label that settles a person or event.

A trace is anything left behind that persists enough to be encountered again.

A trace may be a memory fragment, scar, message, photograph, receipt, recording, witness account, institutional file, bodily habit, learned expectation, location, object, or repeated pattern. It does not need to be permanent. It needs only enough persistence to re-enter a later moment.

Maya's private note is a trace. Lewis's email is a trace. The budget-call notes are traces. The tightening she feels before the next meeting may be a somatic trace of the earlier uncertainty. The colleague's memory is a social trace. The human resources system may contain an institutional trace showing when the promotion request was opened and paused. A trace is not automatically accurate.

A diary preserves what the writer believed or needed to say. A photograph preserves a visual selection from an angle. A scar preserves evidence of injury without explaining its history. A personnel file may preserve the institution's categories more faithfully than the employee's experience. A memory can preserve emotional structure while misplacing sequence. A digital record can be authentic and still be incomplete, decontextualized, or generated from an earlier error.

Persistence creates availability, not truth.

This is one of the framework's most important disciplines. We are strongly tempted to treat whatever survived as whatever mattered most. Archives reward the recordable. They preserve what was written, photographed, entered, repeated, and authorized. They often lose hesitation, atmosphere, private cost, informal objection, and the person who lacked permission to make a record.

The trace has authority because it can return.
